The UBQTM Material is a bio-based thermoplastic composite made from substantially unsorted municipal solid waste. UBQ is able to convert the organic and plastic fractions of the waste stream into a homogeneous, sustainable, high quality, and commercially valuable material. The UBQTM Material can be used as an alternative raw material to make the everyday familiar products industry produces today – just more sustainably. UBQ can effectively leverage and innovate around materials already in circulation rather than extracting and depleting our finite resources within the conventional linear economy.

Material Types

Over the last several years, UBQ has developed a number of commercial material grades of the UBQTM Material that are suitable for a diverse range of applications. UBQ segments its UBQTM Material formulations as shown below:

UBQTM GHG Neutralizer Additives

UBQTM GHG Neutralizer additives enable processors to directly compensate CO2 equivalent emissions (GHG) generated by plastic polymers. Polymers typically emit 1.9 to 3.5 kg of CO2e per kilogram during their production process. UBQTM GHG Neutralizers, conversely, capture on average 15 times their weight of CO2e. Adding as little as 10% UBQTM GHG to a part can immediately transform it into a carbon neutral product. UBQTM GHG is added to product formulations as a Master Batch Additive. It is available in different grades compatible with olefin, styrenic and chlorine based resins.

UBQTM Materials 

UBQTM Materials are bio-based composite thermoplastic materials that can replace plastic polymers in hundreds of applications. UBQTM Materials are the preeminent environmental materials. Made from household waste, including all its organic content, UBQTM Materials substitute oil and agriculture based polymers and wood. They render landfills obsolete and trap, on average, 15 times its weight in CO2 equivalent emissions.

Available in injection, extrusion and compression molding grades. UBQTM Material’s compatibility allows it to be mixed with olefin, styrenic and chlorine based resins or additives to tailor physical characteristics to the part requirements. It is compatible with many existing chemical and polymer additives such as impact modifiers, pigments, coloring agents, flame-retardants, foaming agents and plasticizers.

UBQTM Materials are typically used in concentrations of 30 to 100% of the finished product weight. Even at the lower concentrations, finished parts are carbon negative.

Market Compatibility

UBQ has successfully tested UBQTM Material formulations with loading levels of up to 70% for specific applications within the plastics segment.

UBQTM Material has been proven to substitute common plastic materials such as HDPE, LDPE and PP compounds. The use of UBQTM Material significantly adds to the value proposition and environmental impact of the final products.

Product Application Development Programs

The UBQTM Material has been proven in over 50 product applications with different formulations addressing product centered specifications. We have invested heavily from building in-house laboratories for material and product testing through to in-house manufacturing capabilities for prototyping and first round production runs.

UBQ is actively seeking out new product applications that can leverage the UBQTM Material in a meaningful way. Loopability

We define Loopability as the capacity by which a sustainable material, like the UBQTM Material, can be recycled (looped) several times while maintaining its inherent value and without degrading or ‘downcycled’.

Working closely with SYSTEMIQ, relying specifically on the expertise of Sir David King and Alexandre Kremer, we developed a testing framework that would be able to ascertain the Loopability of the UBQTM Material.  

Testing to date has proven different UBQTM Material formulations capable of reaching Loopability Factor 5. This means that the compound can be Looped (recycled) up to 5 times without degradation.

Our materials are indeed not only converted, upcycled materials but also Loopable – becoming one of the most truly ‘circular materials’ in the market place today.

Health and Safety

UBQ has been working with Vireo Advisors, a leading Boston based international material safety company, to develop a quality environmental certification analysis for the UBQTM Material.

To date, the UBQTM Material has been tested by certified international environmental laboratories for inorganic substances, volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, as well as pesticides and other priority substances of potential concern.

Laboratory testing results demonstrates a safe material according to the most stringent global standards and validates that the UBQTM Material is safe for people and for the environment for the intended uses of UBQTM Material in a wide range of consumer products.
